Swampscott’s Anastasia Hayes and Joey Do are Division 5 track and field state champions, as the two picked up first-place finishes in their respective events to capture state titles at Weston High School Thursday afternoon.

Hayes threw a distance of 109 feet, eight inches in the discus — beating the second-place finisher by more than a foot. She broke her personal record by eight feet on the throw.

Lynnfield’s Riley Hallahan also had a strong showing in the event, finishing fourth overall after throwing a distance of 92 feet, six inches.

As for Do, he took home the state title in the triple jump after leaping a distance of 43 feet, five inches. His win was a much closer one, as he only bested second-place finisher Joey Cucciniello of Lynnfield (43-3 1/2) by an inch and a half.

The Tanners were one out away from grabbing a crucial non-conference win at Kiley Field, but a two-out, two-run home run from Ella Bezanson in the top of the seventh helped hand Peabody the loss.

Emma Bloom had two hits and the lone RBI for the Tanners, while Abby Bettencourt had a multi-hit game. Avery Grieco also had a hit in the loss.

Peabody (16-2) will wrap up its season over the weekend at the annual Courtney Corning Memorial Tournament. The Tanners will take on Danvers in the opening round Saturday morning (11) at Beverly High School.

BASEBALL

The bats were on fire for the Vikings, who recorded their first 10-win season in 14 years with the victory.

Three different players hit home runs in the win, with Evan Rockerfeller (1-for-1, four RBI), Colin Kinsella (1-for-2, one RBI) and Pete Silverman (1-for-2, one RBI) all going yard.

Joe Ferullo went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while Cam Martin went 0-for-2 with two RBI. Matt DeCarney (2-for-2) and Anthony Indrisano (1-for-2) each had one RBI, while Joe Hayes went 2-for-4 with a double.

Three Winthrop pitchers combined for the two-hit shutout, as Ferullo got the win after going three innings and allowing one hit with eight strikeouts and Indrisano and Chris Gibbons each threw an inning of scoreless relief.

Winthrop wraps up the regular season at 10-10 and now awaits its seeding in the upcoming Division 4 state tournament. The Vikings are currently the No. 24 team in the latest MIAA power rankings.
