SAUGUS — The Saugus baseball team saved its best for the final game of the regular season, scoring in every single inning to take home a 12-0 victory in five innings over Everett on Senior Day at World Series Park Friday afternoon.
Prior to the game, the Sachems honored their group of 10 seniors — Ryan Anderson, Drew Gardiner, Nathan Ing, Anthony Macone, Michael Howard, Anthony Cicolini, Ryan Mabee, David Turilli, Sean O’Rourke and Matt MacEachern — for their contributions to the program over the years.
Ing, a senior captain, had the biggest day of all for the Sachems — contributing on both sides of the field. He led the offense after going 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI, while he also picked up the win on the mound after going all five innings and allowing just one hit while striking out nine.
Mabee went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI in the win, while Macone went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Turilli (1-for-2, double) and O’Rourke (0-for-2) each had one RBI, while MacEachern and Anderson each went 2-for-3.
The scoring got started right away for Saugus, and it was Ing who struck the first blow. After striking out the side in the top of the first, Ing stepped into the box with one on and two outs and ripped an RBI double to right field to make it a 1-0 game.
The Sachems added two more runs in the second thanks to an RBI sacrifice fly from O’Rourke and a run on an error, then Turlli’s RBI double in the bottom of the third made it 4-0.
But Saugus didn’t really start pulling away until the fourth and fifth innings, where they pushed across four runs in each frame to seal up the win. In the fourth, the Sachems loaded the bases before an RBI walk from Macone and a bases-clearing, three-run double from Mabee pushed the lead to 8-0. The fifth went almost exactly the same way, with the Sachems loading the bases before an RBI hit-by-pitch from Macone and a three-run double from Ing made the score 12-0 and ended the game via the mercy rule.
Saugus wraps up the regular season at 10-10 and will now await its spot in the upcoming Division 3 state tournament. The Sachems are the No. 27 team in the latest MIAA power rankings and have earned an automatic bid after finishing with a .500 record.
