School Sports Roundup: Lynn English’s Manuel Taveras spins a gem in opening round of Doug Mullins Memorial Tournament

Friday night at Fraser Field was all about pitching, and it was Lynn English’s Manuel Taveras who spun a three-hit gem to lift the Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory over Swampscott in the opening round of the Doug Mullins Memorial Tournament. 

Taveras threw 106 pitches to get through the outing, throwing 66 strikes and striking out nine batters. 

Guilmer Galva drove in the lone run for the Bulldogs, going 1-for-3. Brendan Falasca went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Kenry Manzanillo went 2-for-3. 

Swampscott also got a great pitching performance, as Pierce Friedman went six innings and allowed one run on five hits with 11 strikeouts. 

Only three Big Blue batters were able to record hits in the loss, with Connor Correnti, Jonah Cadorette and Aidan Wyse each notching one. 

Swampscott (12-7) will now take on Lynn Classical in the consolation game of the Mullins Tournament Saturday (1) back at Fraser Field. 

Lynn English (12-6) will now take on St. Mary’s in the championship game of the Mullins Tournament Saturday (4) back at Fraser Field. 

BASEBALL

St. John’s Prep 1, Chelmsford 0

A single run scored in the bottom of the third ended up holding all game long, as the Eagles got a combined two-hitter from Cam Wodarski and Connor Remley. 

Wodarski earned the win after going the first five innings and allowing just one hit with two strikeouts, while Remley allowed just one hit in the final two innings. 

As far as offense, Nick Solitro (1-for-3) had the lone RBI in the win, while Aidan Driscoll (1-for-2, run scored), Kyle Webster (1-for-3), Payton Palladino (1-for-3), Cam LaGrassa (1-for-3 and Caleb Birchem (1-for-2) each had a hit. 

St. John’s Prep (12-7) closes out its regular season Sunday afternoon (3) at home against Central Catholic.

SOFTBALL

Swampscott 15, Hamilton-Wenham 2 (F/6)

Nicolette Fraser went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI in the win, while Emma Bragan went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Megan Holmes (2-for-4), Jocelyn Spickard (2-for-4) and Lauryn Fahey (1-for-4) each had two RBI in the win, while Olivia Barletta went 1-for-2 with one RBI. 

Spickard picked up the win in the circle, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing no runs on just one hit with nine strikeouts. Melanie Blood pitched the final 1/3 of an inning. 

Swampscott (7-11) takes on Lynn English in the opening round of the John Holland Memorial Tournament Saturday (6) at Breed Middle School.

Saugus 8, Marblehead 5

The Sachems got another big performance from Fallon Millerick, who went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI and also earned the win in the circle with a complete-game effort.

Gianna Costa went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI, while Devany Millerick went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Lily Vetre went 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Felicia Reppucci went 3-for-4 with a single, a double and a triple to nearly hit for the cycle. Kaitlyn Pugh and Ryann Moloney also had hits in the victory.

Saugus finishes the season at 13-7 and awaits its seeding in the upcoming Div. 3 state tournament. The Sachems are currently the No. 26 team in the latest MIAA power rankings.

Marblehead finishes the season at 6-14.

Austin Prep 18, Lynnfield 4

Lynnfield finishes the season at 6-14 and hopes to earn enough ranking points to sneak into the upcoming Div. 4 state tournament. The Pioneers are currently the No. 31 team in the latest MIAA power rankings but did not secure an automatic bid because they finished under .500 on the year. 

GIRLS LACROSSE

Ipswich 9, Marblehead 3

Hadley Wales scored two goals to lead the way in the loss for the Magicians, while Ramona Gillett scored one goal and Sydney Langton had one assist. Goalie Kate Santeusanio notched 11 saves in net. 

Marblehead closes out the season at 7-11 and hopes to earn enough ranking points to sneak into the upcoming Div. 2 state tournament. The Magicians are currently the No. 30 team in the latest MIAA power rankings but did not secure an automatic bid because they finished under .500 on the year.
