School Sports Roundup: Peabody softball wins Courtney Corning Memorial Tournament

The Peabody softball team rode a seven-run second inning all the way to a victory Sunday morning, taking home a 13-1 win in five innings over Beverly to capture the title at the 14th annual Courtney Corning Memorial Tournament at Beverly High School. 

It was another massive day at the plate for Gina Terrazzano, who went 1-for-2 with a home run and four RBi to lead the offense. Penny Spack went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Avery Grieco (0-for-2) and Michaela Alperen (0-for-3) each had one RBI. 

Abby Bettencourt picked up the win in the circle for the Tanners, tossing four innings and allowing one run on one hit with eight strikeouts. 

Peabody finishes the season at 18-2 and awaits its seeding in the upcoming Div. 1 state tournament. The Tanners are currently the No. 9 team in the latest MIAA power rankings.

Consolation Game

Bishop Fenwick 7, Danvers 1

Giuliana Micciche went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the offense for Fenwick, while Gigi Aupont went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. 

Aupont picked up the win in the circle once again, going six innings and allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts. 

Bishop Fenwick finishes the season at 12-8 and awaits its seeding in the upcoming Div. 3 state tournament. The Crusaders are currently the No. 13 team in the latest MIAA power rankings.

First Round

Peabody 10, Danvers 3

It was a banner game for Avery Grieco, who went 4-for-4 with a home run and five RBI to pace the offense and also picked up the win in the circle after going 4 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. 

Penny Spack went 2-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI, while Abby Bettencourt went 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI. Logan Lomasney went 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Isabel Bettencourt had a big game after going 3-for-6 with a double. 

Beverly 3, Bishop Fenwick 2

Gigi Aupont went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead the offensive attack for the Crusaders, while she also pitched six innings in the circle and allowed three runs on five hits with 11 strikeouts. 

Emma Burke went 1-for-2 in the loss.

BASEBALL

Lynn Tech 5, Nashoba 4

Wesley Morales went 2-for-2 in the win for the Tigers, while Kolby Bucklin and Dylan Difillippo each had a hit.

Ben Tartarini picked up the win on the mound and Jared Paone earned the save.

Lynn Tech closes the regular season at 12-6 and awaits its seeding in the upcoming Div. 4 state tournament. The Tigers are currently the No. 43 team in the latest MIAA power rankings.

St. John’s Prep 6, Central Catholic 4

The Eagles pushed across four runs in the bottom of the sixth and then held on to close the regular season with a win. 

Nick Solitro went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the win, while Aidan Driscoll, Kyle Webster, Payton Palladino and Victor Harrington each had one RBI. 

St. John’s Prep finishes the season at 13-7 and awaits its seeding in the upcoming Div. 1 state tournament. The Eagles are currently the No. 15 team in the latest MIAA power rankings.

at Fraser Field, Lynn

Consolation Game

Swampscott 8, Lynn Classical 1

Cam O’Brien picked up the complete-game victory for the Big Blue after allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts. 

It was a huge day for Matt Schroeder, who had a single, a double and five RBI to pace the offense. Will Roddy and John Cuttle each added two hits and one RBI in the win. 

Swampscott finishes the season at 13-7 and awaits its seeding in the upcoming Div. 3 state tournament. The Big Blue are currently the No. 20 team in the latest MIAA power rankings.

Lynn Classical closes out the season at 15-5 and awaits its seeding in the upcoming Div. 1 state tournament. The Rams are currently the No. 49 team in the latest MIAA power rankings.

James Geanoulis Memorial Tournament

at Donohue Field, Peabody

Championship Game

Peabody 7, Wakefield 6

Josh Sigmon’s RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth handed the Tanners both the Geanoulis title and a berth in the state tournament. 

Justin Powers pitched a strong game in the win for the Tanners, while Mike Krouse had a double and two RBI. Jacob Palhares notched an RBI single in the victory.

Peabody finishes the season at 10-10 and awaits its seeding in the upcoming Div. 1 state tournament. The Tanners are currently the No. 45 team in the latest MIAA power rankings but they have secured an automatic bid because they finished at .500 on the year.

at Trinity Stadium, Haverhill

Consolation Game

Marblehead 12, Salem 9 (F/8)

The Magicians ended the regular season in style after battling back from seven runs down to force extra innings and eventually pull off the win. 

Schuyler Schmitt went 1-for-3 with three RBI to lead the way, while Liam McIlroy went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Andy Titus went 1-for-4 with a triple and two RBI, while James Doody (2-for-4) and Matthew Titus (0-for-3) each had two RBI. 

Marblehead closes the regular season at 13-7 and awaits its seeding in the upcoming Div. 2 state tournament. The Magicians are currently the No. 15 team in the latest MIAA power rankings.

Jack Doyle (3-for-5, double) and Guillermo Pimental (3-for-4) each had two RBI in the win, while Robert Palacios (3-for-4) had one RBI. 

Salem finishes the season at 1-16.

BOYS LACROSSE

St. John’s Prep 13, Hingham 8

Jake Vana had five goals and three assists to lead the Eagles in the victory, while Jimmy Ayers netted two goals. Tommy Sarni and Rowan Mondello each had one goal and one assist, while Lucas Verrier, Matt Morrow, Charlie Wilmot and Harlan Graber each scored one goal. Chris Esposito notched two assists, while goalie Teddy Cullinane made 10 saves. 

St. John’s Prep (16-1) closes the regular season Thursday (6:30) on the road against Billerica.
