Lynn native Justin Lewis capped off his collegiate career in style over the weekend, as the Texas A&M University Commerce senior earned All-American honors after finishing in a tie for fifth place at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships over the weekend at Grand Valley State University.
Lewis, who had a prolific two-year run at Div. III Worcester State University before transferring to Div. I University of Arizona for two years, jumped a height of 2.16 meters (7 feet, 1 inch) and finished tied for fifth with Lions teammate Dakari Hill. His other teammate, Ushan Perera, won the national championship in the event after jumping a height of 2.22 meters (7 feet, 3 1/4 inches).
The combined efforts of the three jumpers, along with a series of other strong finishes across the other events, helped lift Texas A&M Commerce to a fourth-place finish in the team event with 48 points. Pittsburg State won the team national championship with 70 points.
Lewis, a multi-sport star and former New England champion in the high jump at Lynn Tech, won back-to-back Div. III national titles, earned two All-American nods and broke multiple school records at Worcester State in 2017 and 2018 before transferring to Arizona. His time with the Wildcats saw him notch two second- and two third-place finishes in the year and a half he was there. He placed sixth in the Pac-12 Outdoor Championships in the 2019 season before the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID. After not competing during the 2021 indoor or outdoor seasons, Lewis transferred to Texas A&M Commerce prior to the 2022 season.
