The Saugus baseball team may have fallen behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning Saturday evening, but the No. 28 Sachems never stopped battling in a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over No. 37 Martha’s Vineyard in the preliminary round of the Division 3 state tournament at World Series Park.
The Sachems responded with two runs in the bottom of the first before a four-run bottom of the third put the Sachems ahead for good.
Ryan Anderson had a big day from the leadoff spot, going 2-for-2 with two RBI. Cam Soroko (2-for-4), Anthony Cicolini (2-for-4), Braden Faiella (0-for-2) and Drew Gardner (0-for-1) each had one RBI in the victory, while Anthony Macone (1-for-2), Michael Howard (1-for-3) and Cam Bernard (1-for-1) each added a hit.
Nathan Ing picked up the victory on the mound for the Sachems, as the senior ace came on in relief in the first inning and went all seven innings, allowing one run on no hits with 11 strikeouts. Ryan Mabee got the start and didn’t record an out, allowing four runs on three hits.
Saugus (11-10) now moves on to the Div. 3 Round of 32, where the Sachems will play on the road at No. 5 Foxborough Monday afternoon (4).
BASEBALL
Division 1 Preliminary Round
No. 27 Algonquin 6, No. 38 Peabody 3
A number of errors in the field ended up dooming the Tanners, whose rally came up just short Saturday afternoon.
Joe Raymond had a double and one RBI for Peabody, while Jacob Palhares notched an RBI single.
Peabody closes out the 2022 season at 10-11.
No. 24 Framingham 8, No. 41 Lynn English 0
Josh Jimenez and Mateo Rodriguez notched the only two hits for the Bulldogs in the losing effort Saturday. Manuel Taveras, Ray Contreras and Alex MacMillan all saw time on the mound for English.
Lynn English closes out the 2022 season at 12-8.
No. 25 Durfee 9, No. 40 Lynn Classical 2
The Rams made nine errors and only notched three hits in the road loss Saturday.
Almani Medina (1-for-2, double) and Christian Spates (1-for-2) each had one RBI in the loss, while Brady Warren and Christian Figueroa each went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Senior Kyle Durant pitched well on the mound despite the loss.
Lynn Classical closes out the 2022 season at 14-7.

Colin Kinsella went 1-for-1 with a double and one RBI in the loss, while Phil Boncore went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

SOFTBALL

The Tanners may have only scattered five hits throughout the game on Sunday afternoon, but three of them left the ballpark as they pushed onto the next round.
It was a massive day for Abby Bettencourt, who launched two solo home runs at the plate and also tossed a complete-game shutout with 11 strikeouts in the circle.
Gina Terrazzano also hit a solo home run in the win, while Penny Spack notched a double.
Peabody (19-2) will now head off to the Div. 1 Round of 16, where the Tanners will play on the road at No. 8 Reading Tuesday (4:30).
Division 3 Preliminary Round
No. 27 Saugus 13, No. 38 Belchertown 1 (F/6)
Devany Millerick (3-for-5), Gianna Costa (2-for-4, triple) and Felicia Reppucci (1-for-3, double) led the red-hot Sachems with two RBI apiece in the win, while Paige Hogan and Felicia Alexander each had one RBI.
Fallon Millerick picked up the win in the circle for the Sachems, going all six innings and allowing one run on five hits with two strikeouts.
Saugus (14-7) moves on to the Div. 3 Round of 32, where the Sachems will go up against No. 6 Austin Prep Monday (4).
Division 4 Preliminary Round
No. 30 Lynnfield 18, No. 35 Boston English 0 (F/5)
Morgan Hubbard (4-for-4), Kaila George (3-for-4) and Maddie Condon (2-for-4) each had three RBI to propel the Pioneers to the blowout victory in the opening round.
Catie Kampersal (2-for-3) and Ava Gamache (2-for-4) each had two RBI in the victory, while Ava Marotta (3-for-3, home run) and Celia Carbone (2-for-3) each had one RBI. Abi Travers (2-for-4) also had a multi-hit game for the Pioneers, while pitcher Sophia Brown allowed just two hits and struck out seven batters in a complete-game effort in the circle.
Lynnfield (7-14) will now move on to face No. 3 Wahconah on the road in the Div. 4 Round of 32 Monday (4).
BOYS LACROSSE

The Pioneers swept the match with singles wins from Harrison Luba, Dan Levin and Shea McCarthy as well as doubles wins from the team of David Kasdon and Rafik Khodr and the team of Russell Kasdon and Jason Yang.
Lynnfield (16-1) moves on to the Div. 4 Round of 16, where the Pioneers will host No. 15 Bartlett or No. 18 St. John’s Paul II at a date and time to be determined.
