The North Shore Juneteenth Association, Inc. is hosting several local events to commemorate Juneteenth.
Juneteenth, or June 19, is a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It marks the day in 1865 that all enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom.
On Wednesday, in collaboration with the Town of Marblehead’s Task Force against Discrimination, NSJA will host a flag raising ceremony in Marblehead at Abbot Hall at 5 p.m. Family activities on the lawn begin at 4:30 p.m. Board of Selectmen Chair Jackie Belf-Becker will deliver a welcome address.
NSJA President Nicole McClain will provide introductory remarks, following which Veterans Middle School student Damilola Gracielle Olabisi will read a poem. Nikki Moore, member emeritus of the Marblehead Racial Justice Team will also speak. Martina Campbell will perform the Black National Anthem.
Swampscott’s Second Annual Juneteenth Celebration will take place at Town Hall on Thursday, June 16 at 1 p.m. All ages are welcome to participate with local food, live music and yard games. The event is presented by The Town of Swampscott and Deij Critical Partner Tamy-Fee Meneide.
The City of Salem will raise its Juneteenth flag at City Hall, 93 Washington St. on Saturday, June 18 at 3 p.m. Guest speakers include McClain and Rev. Dr. Andre Bennett. The Black National Anthem will also be performed.
In partnership with the Lynn/Museum/Lynn Arts, Eastern Bank and the Massachusetts Cultural Council, NSJA will celebrate Juneteenth at the Lynn Museum and Frederick Douglas Park, 590 Washington St. on Sunday, June 19 beginning at 11 a.m. The event is free and will include food, music, artists, crafts, and vendors.
