St. Mary’s students led a rally for peace Tuesday, adding theirs to the growing number of voices demanding action to try to reduce gun violence.
Students, led by Aniya Myette, Michelle Azzun, Diana Cherubin, and Roman Daniel, gathered on the Molloy Twomey Green behind the school for a moment of silent reflection and a student-written prayer. They were joined by Mayor Jared C. Nicholson and Police Chief Chris Reddy.
Student leaders, wearing orange in solidarity with those who are calling for gun-law reform, walked to City Hall with Nicholson and Reddy to lay flowers on the front steps to commemorate the lives lost to gun violence.
Nicholson urged the students to “reflect and remember the lives lost unnecessarily and in heartbreaking fashion to gun violence,” and to “amplify your voices for change.”
“We value that voice and are proud of you for stepping up and demanding change,” the mayor added.
Reddy told the students to “continue to be informed and engaged and use your voice for positive change. Speak up and show everyone dignity and respect,” he said.
St. Mary’s Head of School Dr. John F. Dolan commended the mayor and police chief for coming to campus, meeting with students, and “having a real exchange with the leaders of our future. As role models for city leadership, you moved the needle.”
