NAHANT  —  Officials are investigating an apparent drowning at the Cary Street Club in Nahant Tuesday afternoon that left a 22-year-old woman dead, according to police.

Nahant police and fire responded at the club, which is located at 89 Summer St., at 3 p.m.  for a report of an unresponsive woman, Police Chief Timothy Furlong and Fire Chief Austin Antrim said in a joint statement. The woman was taken to Salem Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The woman’s name was not released, and the incident remains under investigation by the Essex district attorney’s office.

At the scene Tuesday, Herb Motley, 79, who lives next door to the club said the woman was an au pair for one of two families in the pool. According to Motley, who said he spoke to one of the family members, the woman was in the pool diving for something, and “something was wrong” when she came up for air.

“She was having difficulties,” Motley said.

Police blocked off the pool at the club Tuesday, and Furlong could be seen taking photos around the area.

The club is located at the end of Summer Street, overlooking the water, and a sign on the property described it as for “members only.” Two tennis courts could be seen on the property.

Carrie Kimball, a spokeswoman for the Essex district attorney’s office, said she had no additional information to release Tuesday evening. The district attorney will investigate the incident, she said.
