The No. 3 Lynnfield girls tennis team hasn’t made it easy on itself in the first two rounds of the Division 4 state tournament, but the Pioneers were once again able to pull things out in the final match to notch a 3-2 victory over No. 14 Rockport in the Round of 16 Wednesday afternoon at Lynnfield Middle School.

First and third singles players Paige Martino and Genna Gioioso both dominated their matches and got off the court quickly, with Martino winning 6-0, 6-1 and Gioioso winning 6-1, 6-0.

The doubles matches were also happening at the same time, but they both went to three sets and took a bit longer. The team of Lauren Grava and Maddie Sieve took the opening set 6-4 before dropping the next two 1-6, 3-6. In the other match, the team of Sarah Breslow and Leticia Marafon battled back after losing the first set 2-6 to win the second set 6-4. But after forcing a tiebreaker in the third set, the duo came up just short in a 5-7 loss.

But luckily for the Pioneers, second singles player Anna Radulski was still on the court, and the senior captain delivered. Radulski dispatched her opponent by set scores of 6-3, 6-2 to hand the Pioneers another victory.

Lynnfield (15-5) will now move on to the Div. 4 Round of 8, where the Pioneers will face off against another familiar foe in No. 6 Manchester-Essex on Saturday (4) back at Lynnfield Middle School.
