The Swampscott boys lacrosse team wasn’t going to let its season end without a fight, and the No. 25 Big Blue fought back and forth with No. 8 Newburyport before pulling out the 6-5 upset win in the Division 3 tournament Round of 32 Thursday afternoon on the road at Newburyport High School.

“It was an incredible back-and-forth game the whole way,” said Swampscott coach Geoff Beckett. “There were great saves and great clears on both ends, and we were just able to make enough plays to pull out the win.”

Jack Russo and Cole Hamernick led the offensive attack for the Big Blue with two goals apiece, while Harrison Kinne and Jason Codispoti each scored one goal. Liam Keaney and Christian Urbano each notched two assists, while goalie Aidan Breault was a stone wall in net with 12 saves against the high-powered Newburyport offense.

Swampscott (10-8) now moves on to the Div. 3 Round of 16, where the Big Blue will once again look to notch an upset victory in a road matchup with No. 9 Pentucket Saturday (TBD).

The Magicians battled hard on the road, but couldn’t make up the eight-goal deficit they fell into by halftime.

Hadley Wales led the offense with four goals, while Sydney Langton scored the other two for the Magicians. Goalie Kate Santeusanio had a massive game in net despite the loss, tallying 13 saves between the pipes.

Marblehead closes out the 2022 season at 8-12.

St. Mary’s wraps up the 2022 season at 8-13-1.
