GROVELAND — The Swampscott boys lacrosse team may have gotten off to a slow start Saturday morning, but in the end the No. 25 Big Blue were able to pick up yet another upset victory by rallying back to knock off No. 9 Pentucket in the Division 3 tournament Round of 16 at Pentucket Middle School.
The win also allowed Swampscott to serve a bit of revenge to Pentucket, who had beaten them 14-5 earlier this season.
Liam Keaney led the offensive attack with two goals and one in the victory, while Jason Codispoti scored two goals. Zack Pierce added one goal and two assists, while Jack Russo, Carson Palmer, Cole Hamernick and Harrison Kinne each scored one goal. Goalie Aidan Breault was a big factor in the victory, notching nine saves between the pipes.
It was a slow start for the Big Blue, who fell behind 3-0 in the opening minutes after Pentucket came out firing. But Swampscott settled things down after a timeout, and the Big Blue went on to rattle off five goals to Pentucket’s one and enter the halftime break tied at 5-5.
The scoring went back and forth from there before Russo gave Swampscott an 8-7 lead heading into the fourth.
Keaney made it a 9-7 game early in the fourth quarter, and the Big Blue were able to hang on from there to secure the upset win.
Swampscott (11-8) will now try to continue its cinderella run in the Div. 3 Round of 8, when the Big Blue will once again go on the road to face No. 1 Medfield Wednesday evening (6:30) at Medfield High School.
