SWAMPSCOTT — After over 25 years of experience each, educators, Councilor Cathy Kalpin at Clarke Elementary School, and Fifth Grade Math Teacher, Mary Powers at Swampscott Middle School, both of whom are set to retire, were honored at the Gannon Golf Course in Lynn Thursday.
Over 55 people attended the event celebrating Kalpin and Powers, with attendees ranging from fellow retirees to current school employees. During the event, Swampscott Superintendent Pamela Angelakis shared fond memories she has of Powers and Kalpin.
“Cathy started as a parent to the students that I taught and Mary Powers, at a book club together as teachers, I would hear her speak and I literally had to look in the dictionary, they were worse than SAT words,” said Angelakis.
Angelakis said when she thinks of the educators, two words come to mind — patience and kindness.
“Their authenticity has impacted so many kids, they are who they are and they’re unapologetic about it, but then you have to be because they’re kind to everyone,” said Angelakis.
Kalpin, during her remarks, reflected on her mantra, challenges, and her greatest achievements.
“Swampscott is a great school system to work for. I loved being a counselor in the building. With unbelievable support, together we shine,” said Kalpin.
As public school education transitioned, the two women were able to adapt.
“I think teaching with like-minded people that have common visions magic happens,” said Powers.
Working with the school committee, the biggest moment Powers and Kalpin are most proud of is being able to work with colleagues that may not always agree, but make sure those involved leave feeling heard.
