LYNNFIELD — Lynnfield High’s boys varsity tennis team is counting the hours until its Division 4 state final match against Weston this evening (4:30) at the duPont tennis courts on the campus of MIT.
This is the first year of the statewide tournament, but the Pioneers have had plenty of experience with Weston. Last year, they lost to Weston in the Division 1 North final, 5-0.
But the difference between last year and this year can be felt with freshman Shea McCarthy, a third singles player, who, in his previous appearance, swept his match with twin 6-0 scores.
Returning with the team are Co-Captains, Harrison Luba, at first singles, and David Kasdon at first doubles. Also returning with the team is Jason Yang-Russel Kasdon, at second doubles, Rafik Khodr at first doubles, and Dan Levin at second singles, with their coach Joseph Dunn.
The Pioneers are 19-1 so far this season with their only loss coming from a division one school and are 20-0 in the tournament. The team has had trouble with Weston before losing last year in the finals and in 2019 losing to them in the semi-finals 3-2.
Elsewhere on the North Shore, St. John’s Prep will be facing Needham at Burlington High today at 10:30 a.m.
The Prep, the No. 1 seed in Division 1, will play the winner of Lincoln-Sudbury and BC High for the championship at Worcester State at a time and date to be determined.
