LYNN — A recent graduate of Lynn English High School, Wilmer Huggins Rivera was awarded the Disabled American Veterans Lynn-Swampscott Chapter 64 Volunteer Scholarship.
During his high school career, Rivera received the Civic Service award, the American Legion Bronze Medal for Scholastic Achievement, the Daedalian JROTC award, the Rookie of the Year award, the distinguished Scholastic Achievement award, the Physical Achievement award, and the Seal of Biliteracy. All of these accomplishments were part of the reason Rivera earned the $500 award.
Rivera’s extracurricular activities included the Drill Team and PT Team, after he completed Advanced Individual Training as a member of the Massachusetts Army National Guard during the summer of 2022. In the spring of 2023 he plans to attend Salem State University, majoring in nursing.
Under the Chapter 64 DAV program, there are four $500 scholarships that are awarded. Two of the awards are dedicated to volunteers in service to veterans, and the other two are for relatives of vets. One Swampscott resident and one Lynn resident are provided two awards by each program every year. These scholarships can be put to use for any accredited post-high school education.
Each Swampscott and Lynn resident winner is selected based on their leadership skills; participation in service organizations, clubs, and other student groups at school and in the community, along with their academic record.
