SAUGUS — At Kowloon restaurant Saturday night, diners were treated to a concert from The Cover Girls, who performed at the Saugus institution’s “Disco Dance Party.”
Despite the windy and chilly June evening, audience members said they enjoyed the show and that it reminded them of their childhood.
“Because we are children of the 80s, and we grew up in Boston where they used to sing in clubs,” said Christine Kaliris.
She came to the show with her friends Tricia Vinci, Pam DiFraia, and Cheryl Moccia, for a “girls’ night out” — just like a group of younger women, Vanessa Martin, Janet Giuliano, Leanne Czuchra, and Jackie D’Amato.
One of the participants, who declined to provide her name, said that she came, because it “brings back memories of my childhood, and this is the music I grew up listening to.”
Former Item employee, Jane Hinds, came to the concert to celebrate her 86th birthday, and she asked this reporter to convey her love to the paper’s staff. Hinds was dancing and indulging in the show as if she were decades younger.
Another participant of the event, Loren Walsh, said that she came to support her cousin, who was performing.
Christine Viarella said that she and her friend, Christine Fiore, came to celebrate their birthdays.
“Our birthdays are on the same day, and this is our birthday present to each other, and this is our birthday celebration together. We’ve been friends since we were 5,” said Viarella.
Fiore said that she did not expect the weather to be so cold, but they still decided to come, because they “have lots of good memories from the 80s.” And some, like Colleen DeFuria, said the reason they came to the concert was to dance.
The Cover Girls are an all-female, New York City-based freestyle group that achieved most of its chart success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Among the group’s best-known songs are “Show Me,” “Because of You,” “We Can’t Go Wrong” and “Wishing on a Star.”
The restaurant’s public relations consultant, Lauren Birmingham said that with the Kowloon Summer Concert Series, the outdoor venue, which started as a Tiki Bar concept and evolved into a car hop and outdoor drive-in during COVID, has now expanded into a popular outdoor concert location.
