Swedish artist collective squeaks into Market Street with new storefronts

LYNNFIELD — Market Street gained a few new shops this week, but you might miss them if you don’t look down — way down.

Overnight on Tuesday, artist collective Anonymouse added fairytale-esque storefronts to the open-air shopping center, including The Sugarcube Sweet Shop and Frankie & Benjy’s Bookstore.

These intricately designed “mouse-sized” stores have been tucked away amongst the other regular-sized stores. Gazing inside, however, viewers can even see details like books and fruit.

Gadget, a representative for Anonymouse described the inspiration behind the project as, “It started off as a creative outlet … we wanted to make something that, if we were still kids, we would find charming when we discovered it on the street.”

The Market Street installations are just two of many that have popped up around “Moussachusetts” recently. Eight more installations can be found at four other locations in and around Boston. These are the first vignettes that the Malmö, a Sweden-based group, have constructed in the United States.

About what message Anonymouse hopes to send viewers, Gadget said, “in essence it’s about spreading a little bit of everyday magic to people who happen to stumble upon them. We invite them to play with us or inspire them to make their own something …”
