Tedesco Cup in full swing

MARBLEHEAD — For the eagle. Today marks the opening of the Tedesco Cup over at the Tedesco Country Club.

“It’s a lot of fun. You see families and friends out there and the course is in really good shape. So the greens were pretty pure and the high fescue grass is coming in quite a bit,” said Jack Sharrio. “When you’re sitting up here on the first tee you can see the brown grass and it looks great.”

Greg Menamara, another competitor, added “The greens were very pure, rolling very fast. Good shots were rewarded and bad shots were penalized, it’s just the way it is.”

The Tedesco course is known to be quite windy which can make the playing conditions harder than normal. “It’s not as windy as it normally is, which is a good thing,” said Sharrio. “No. 12 and 13 seemed to be playing well today. Someone holed out for an eagle two on 12, which you don’t see very often here.”

“I think the greens were pretty fair, like they were fast but in a good way. In the morning especially like the ball was rolling through,” said Sharrio. “So, you hit a good put. It’s not like you’re getting weird bounces and the bunkers were pretty good too.”

Friday was just the first round of the course before the second round on Saturday. Player pairings may change depending on first-round scores.

Many players said they were working on second-round adjustments to address the speed of the greens – and other challenges the Skip Wogan design poses for players of all abilities.

“I’m trying to get my speeds out a little bit more, a little faster. As usual,” said Church Waesche.

“We gotta keep the ball afar off the tee and we should be fine. When you’re in the woods hitting your second shot it’s just like ya,” said Menamara.

Waesche chimed in at the end, “definitely my putting,” which earned a round of laughter from the table.

Players will be up bright and early Saturday for the start of the second day of the cup and as we wait to see who comes out on top.
