SALEM — The Northeast Animal Shelter is overflowing with beagles. Fortunately, they are also overflowing with applications to adopt them.
On June 16, 76 beagles arrived at the shelter after being rescued from a breeding facility. Another 20 arrived on June 21. According to the shelter, the beagles were used for research and were “housed in confined and unsanitary conditions. These dogs had very little socialization with people.”
After people found out about the beagles, the shelter received overwhelming interest in adopting the beagles. As a result, the shelter decided to close the beagle adoption inquiry form. The adoption link now brings up a message that reads, “we received an overwhelming number of adoption inquiries (over 800!) for the beagles in our care, and we’re humbled by the outpouring of support from our community.”
Mike Keiley, director of adoption centers and programs at the Massachusetts Society for the Protection and Care of Animals-Angell Animal Medical Center said the support from the community has been “truly heartwarming.”
“We feel confident that we can soon place them all in loving homes in which they’ll be cherished the way they deserve to be,” Keiley said.
The MSPCA said they could not comment on the matter due to a non disclosure agreement.
