The fireworks display at Lynn Beach on July 3 will cost appreciably more to stage this year, but the City has surpassed the fundraising goal, thanks to a late push fueled by the generosity of area businesses.
This year, the City needed to raise $60,000 for its share of the cost for the fireworks, which it runs in conjunction with the Town of Swampscott. That is approximately twice as much as in past years, primarily due to increased public safety expenses from the State Police, according to Lynn DPW Associate Commissioner Lisa Nerich.
The Fireworks Fund got a boost last week when WIN Waste Innovations, a Saugus waste-to-energy facility, donated $5,000 and McGrath Enterprises, a Lynn construction company, contributed $1,000. That brought the total raised to approximately $49,000 less than two weeks before the celebration.
Needing to work some magic with little time to spare, Nerich reached out to Nick Meninno Sr. of Meninno Construction, which has been doing business in the City for 90 years. Meninno and his son, Nick Jr., were able to raise about $15,000 by soliciting other businesses with which they are affiliated.
In addition to Meninno Construction, donating to the Fireworks Fund were: Atlantic Paving, Bent Water Brewing, Centercorp Retail Properties, D&R Construction, Dandreo Brothers General Contractors, EZ Landscaping, G/J Towing, P. Gioioso & Sons Construction, Robert W. Irvine & Sons, Old Neighborhood Foods, Palladino Construction and Raffaele Construction.
“We are most grateful for the generosity of all of these companies, as well as everyone who supported the carnival and golf tournament,” Nicholson said. “We are looking forward to another great fireworks show that everyone can enjoy.”
The fireworks are scheduled to be set off at approximately 8:30 p.m. on July 3.
