DUXBURY — A Saugus man was arrested on Route 3A Tuesday after police saw him allegedly wielding a knife and attempting to gain access to cars on the highway, officials said in a statement.
Johnny Lewis Jr. is charged with disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, and carrying a dangerous weapon in connection with the incident, Duxbury police said.
Officers observed Lewis allegedly “behaving erratically” in the area of 2 Tremont St., the statement said. A detective in an unmarked cruiser saw Lewis in the middle of the road jumping in and out of traffic, and at one point saw Lewis allegedly attempt to gain access to two vehicles stopped at the off-ramp, police said. The detective spotted an object in Lewis’s hand, later identified as an automatic knife, and called for backup.
Multiple officers made contact with Lewis, who initially complied with police and set the knife on the hood of a car. As officers placed Lewis in handcuffs, he allegedly reached for the knife and began a “significant struggle.”
Two officers suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital. Lewis was also taken to the hospital for evaluation.
