PEABODY — Navigating some of the city’s streets may be a little challenging this summer due to a number of summer road projects that are beginning construction this week.

On Monday, milling work began on Prospect Street, Downing Road, Princeton Street, Cider Mill Road (a small section), Lowell Street (two sections near St. Adelaide’s Church) and Perley Avenue.

“Our milling contractor, DNR, is in all (this) week and set to begin milling work,” said Mayor Edward A. Bettencourt, Jr.  “We are also planning for Sunset and Elaine Ave. but it will depend on how the work progresses.”

Bettencourt said milling work is also planned for a stretch of Lynn Street, Foster and Ward 2 streets, the Abington area, and the Coleman/Kingdom/Raymond areas. He expects to have the dates that those projects will begin shortly. He said residents and motorists should be mindful of the fact that the milling work will take approximately three to four weeks until the roads are repaved.

Granite curbing, handicap ramps and sidewalk work will be starting within the next two  weeks at the Lynnfield Street/Summit Street/ County street intersection with some additional work near the South School/Carroll Savage Park.

Bettencourt said milling and paving work will be done later this summer at Lynnfield Street (from Washington Street to Luigi’s), County and Johnson and that National Grid is getting ready to replace a 100-year-old cast iron pipe on County Street this summer that must be completed prior to the street being milled and paved.  He asks that drivers use caution and care.

“As always, we ask drivers in the affected areas to be alert for work crews,” he said. “Where necessary, electronic message boards will be utilized to provide drivers with real time updates during the work and Peabody Police will be on hand to help ensure pedestrian and traffic safety. We will also notify nearby residents via the city’s community messaging system.”
