NAHANT — The School Committee reminded residents on Tuesday that there were still open slots in the Summer Day Camp, Summer Academic Enrichment Program, and 2022 Summer Acceleration Learning Academy.
“Spaces are limited, but there could be some slots open,” said Superintendent Tony Pierantozzi.
Pierantozzi said that the Summer Acceleration Learning Academy will run from Aug. 22 to Aug. 26, and is a four-hour a day program. This year marks the second year the district is running this program.
“It is in response to COVID when students lost their learning time and it’s to make up for some of the learning time they lost,” said Pierantozzi.
The district is still waiting for state approval of funding for the program after it submitted a request for funding out of the special funding category, he said. Last year state funding was around $6,000.
“We are still waiting for the final approval. We have submitted a request, and we have not heard back yet,” said Pierantozzi.
The Summer Academic Enrichment Program, he said, is planned to run for four weeks, from July 18 until Aug. 12 as a three-hour a day program that focuses on English Language Learning and mathematics. The Summer Acceleration Learning Academy focuses on academic skills, such as homework skills, and preparing students for the next school year.
Summer-Day Camp, said Pierantozzi, runs after the Summer Academic Enrichment program on the same days.
“The Summer Academic Enrichment Program will finish at 11:30, and Summer Day Camp will run from 11:30 until 5:30,” he said.
Pierantozzi said that at this point the district has about 21 students registered for the Summer Day Camp; 47 students registered for the Summer Academic Enrichment Program; and 33 students registered for the Summer Acceleration Learning Academy. Participation in the program is voluntary.
“We are a public school system; we can’t force parents and children to any program,” said Pierantozzi. “We offer the program, and the parents and guardians make a decision if they want the students to attend.”
Pierantozzi also delivered a facilities report to the School Committee, saying that the facilities were in “a really good shape,” and the school was getting ready for the next school year.
“The custodians are tearing the building apart, not literally. What they are doing is removing everything from all the rooms, dust being cleaned, polishing,” said Pierantozzi.
The School Committee also approved the last $27,041 of expenditures for FY22, which ended on June 30, but public boards can approve expenditures until July 15, said Pierantozzi.
“These will be the last expenditures out of the fiscal 2022 budget with the exception of two items that are encumbered. An encumbered item is the item that is in process or has not been completed,” he said.
