SALEM — A 32-year-old Salem man was arrested Tuesday morning after an hours-long standoff that began after he allegedly stole an electric bike and “displayed what appeared to be a handgun,” police said.
Andrew Allard was taken into police custody around 11 a.m. Tuesday after efforts by a SWAT team to lure him out of the home proved unsuccessful, and forced entry was made. Police found the stolen bike and a BB gun inside the basement, Police Chief Lucas Miller said in a statement.
Police were alerted to the robbery, which took place on Broadway near the intersection of Charles Street, around 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, the statement said. The robbery victim told police Allard had allegedly fled into the house at 106 Broadway.
Responding officers “secured the scene” while police sought a search warrant for the home, the statement said.
No one was injured in the incident, police said.
“This was a high-risk situation and we were able to get a search warrant to enter the home,” said Captain Marc Berube.
