SAUGUS — The Saugus Fire Department teamed up with the Saugus Fire Relief Association to create an “Over Door Key Keeper” program for residents to establish a safety net in case of an at-home emergency.
Saugus Fire Department Administrative Assistant Michelle Wendell said two different lock boxes are available — residential and commercial. Wendell said that residential lock boxes are used to get into homes of “people on the floor” in the case of an emergency.
Meanwhile, the commercial lock boxes allow the fire department to enter a commercial building in the case of an emergency without needing to knock a door down.
According to the Saugus Fire Department, the lock key box helps avoid “costly damage” to a home, since it will help prevent breaking down doors or having to find an alternative way inside.
These boxes are placed above the primary door used to enter the building, and are unable to be removed except by emergency personnel.
