Rep. Paul Tucker, one of two candidates to replace departing Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett, announced the endorsement of Rep. Jessica Giannino on Thursday.

Tucker, a democrat, is running against fellow democrat James O’Shea. He said he is appreciative of Giannino’s support in the upcoming election.

“I sincerely appreciate the support of Rep. Jessica Giannino who shares my commitment to expanding community programs that have proven successful in our efforts to decrease crime and promote public safety in Saugus and every Essex County Community,” he said in a statement.

Tucker was a police officer in Salem for 32 years, with an additional five years served as police chief. He then became Salem’s state representative after he retired from the department.

Giannino said there is “no better candidate in this race” than Tucker, as he will “ensure high standards are upheld in prosecution and prevention of future crimes.”

“As a former police chief and state representative, Paul has a strong record of showing up to deliver better outcomes for his constituents,” she said. “He understands that to be the district attorney for all of Essex County, you need to get to communities like Saugus to talk to residents about the everyday issues we are facing.”

O’Shea was endorsed by the Lynn Police Association on Wednesday.
