LYNN –– David Brown Jr., a basketball and football standout for St. Mary’s, is heading into his senior year and is leaning toward the gridiron for collegiate athletics.
Brown is a top-notch athlete in both sports, notably being named to the Boston Globe Super Team for basketball and receiving All-Scholastic honors in football.
He also is the son of St. Mary’s Basketball Coach David Brown Sr. and the grandson of one of Lynn’s all-time best athletes “Pistol” Pete Pedro.
Now with an impending decision about his athletic career, Brown says he is considering pursuing football in college.
In terms of when he first started considering football rather than basketball Brown said, “I think it was just this past season. I would not say that I did not enjoy playing basketball as much, but I think I just had way more fun with football, just being there out on the field.”
Brown is a versatile talent on the field. He can put up multiple touchdown games as a wide receiver or running back, shut down opponents on defense as a corner, and control field position on special teams as a punter or returner.
Over time Brown says his love for football has grown more and more. “Throughout middle school and when I was younger, it always just traded off with whatever sport I was playing was my favorite and what I wanted to do in the future. Once I got to high school, I think I just fell in love with football more,” said Brown.
The atmosphere of football is something Brown says continues to draw him to the game and has helped develop his love for it.
“Friday night games, there is nothing else really like that. So in football, you play once a week rather in basketball, you play three times, so when you get to that Friday, you are waiting, you are eager for that game,” said Brown.
Brown also expressed that his grandfather is definitely a massive part of where his love for football has come from.
“My grandfather, he would always come to my games when I was younger, and I always hear stories about how he would play, how he was so good at football, so I think that is where I probably get the love for the game the most- hearing about him and all the good stuff he did,” said Brown.
Brown will play both sports during his senior year at St. Mary’s. For basketball, he would love to win the state title and take on a mentor role for younger players on the squad before he heads to college.
After falling in the semi-finals last season, there is unfinished business in football as Brown and St. Mary’s will look to avenge the loss and go to a Super Bowl.
As for where Brown might be playing in college, he says he has spoken with schools like Bentley, Assumption, New Haven, Stonehill, Holy Cross, and more and hopes to receive a scholarship to a school.
