LYNN— ‘Tis the sea-son for swimming. With the recent bouts of overwhelming heat, it’s only natural that people are flocking to the beach. However, there are some important plans coming up surrounding water quality.
King’s Beach has been one of Mayor Jared Nicholson’s primary concerns. The beach has a history of elevated levels of bacteria. The Lynn Water and Sewer Commission (LWSC) is collaborating with Kleinfelder, an environmental engineering company, to analyze the state of the beach’s water. The water is monitored and tested everyday.
On his Instagram, Nicholson said “We are taking a collaborative approach to address a regional problem. There are no easy answers, but all the key stakeholders have come together to work on what we hope will be long-term solutions.”
King’s Beach is not the only body of water being put to the hygienic test. Thursday, the city announced plans to treat Sluice Pond and Flax Pond with herbicides. These chemicals aim to control aquatic vegetation and the ponds are planned to be treated on Aug. 8.
Swimming, boating, and fishing are prohibited in Sluice Pond and Flax Pond until Aug. 9. Drinking and cooking with the water is prohibited until Aug. 11, and using the water for seeded turf is prohibited until Aug. 13.
