LYNN — Sluice Pond and Flax Pond will temporarily close next week for aquatic herbicide treatment aimed at killing off nuisance aquatic vegetation.
Starting Monday, Aug. 8, Upton-based water management company Water & Wetland, LLC, using a permit from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection under an order of conditions from the Lynn Conservation Commission, will treat both ponds with a state and federally regulated herbicide.
The ponds will be closed to swimming, boating, and fishing until Tuesday, Aug. 9. Additional restrictions include: a one-day restriction on livestock and domestic animal consumption, a three-day restriction on using pond water for drinking and cooking, and irrigation of turf and landscape ornamentals, and a five-day restriction on using pond water to irrigate food crops, production ornamentals, and newly seeded turf.
Temporary signs that warn of the applicable water use restrictions will be posted around the pond shoreline in advance of treatment.
