LYNN — A 23-year-old Lynn woman and her baby were struck in a hit-and-run Monday morning on South Common Street.
Witness Beth Murray, of Lynn, was traveling down South Common Street around 10:00 a.m. when she saw one of the passing cars strike a mother pushing a baby carriage across the crosswalk near Franklin Street.
Murray said that the car, which she said was a black SUV, did not slow down or stop after hitting the mother and her child.
“All I could see were all four of the tires going over the woman’s body, the baby carriage fall, and I saw one of her legs kick up when one of the back rear tires went over her body,” Murray said. “The car just took off, it just ran over her body and kept going, no regard for her life or the baby whatsoever.”
Murray then got out of her car and rushed to the baby carriage to check on the child’s wellbeing. She said that the mother tried to get up to pick up her child but could not stand.
“I rushed to the baby carriage, I heard the baby crying as I ran up to the carriage, which is a good thing. I picked up the carriage, the baby seemed okay, it couldn’t have been more than a month old,” Murray said. “She tried to sit up, to reach for her baby, but she couldn’t.”
After touching the baby’s limbs and joints to see if it had any sensitive wounds, Murray said that the baby sat snug in the carriage, and appeared to be unharmed.
Lt. Michael Kmiec, a spokesman for Lynn Police, said that the woman was taken to Salem Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, and the child was also taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
“I’m just glad the baby’s okay,” Murray said. “I just hope that they find the person or the person at least has the decency to turn themselves in, because how can you be someone like that and have no regard, not even hesitate to stop, knowing there’s a baby carriage?”
No arrests have been made and an investigation into the crash remains ongoing, Kmiec said.
