LYNN — Witnesses say the police took the wrong man into custody after an alleged carjacking near the Dunkin’ Donuts on Lewis Street Wednesday afternoon.
One witness said that there was an attempted carjacking that involved someone being pulled through a car window. When police arrived, witnesses said the officers took a Black man into custody.
After the man was taken into custody, three police officers tried to calm witnesses and bystanders, and tried to get them to go back inside their apartment building across the street or leave the scene. One of the agitated bystanders repeatedly yelled at the officers, saying they got the wrong person.
After police left the area, another witness, who had also been trying to calm the bystander, reiterated that the man they had detained was not the perpetrator. This witness alleged they had only taken him into custody because he is a Black man and is on parole.
Police at the scene were not available for comment.
