LYNN – Flames ripped through a two-story home on Green Street Saturday morning, sending one person to the hospital.

Firefighters were sent to 52 Green St. at around 6:00 a.m., said District Chief Joseph Zukas. Upon arrival, firefighters responding to the scene saw heavy flames on the second floor of the building, near the left corner, as well as heavy smoke.

Zukas said that one resident was home when the fire broke out, and they were able to self-evacuate before firefighters arrived on the scene.

“Three residents lived on the second floor and three residents lived on the first floor. One resident was home at the time of the fire and they self-evacuated before the fire department got there,” Zukas said.

District Chief Michael McBride led the response to the blaze, striking a second alarm to draw more crews to the scene, allowing firefighters to rotate amid the sweltering heat. Ambulances set up tents on-scene to check the firefighters’ vital signs, Zukas said.

“The guys did a fantastic job under high heat conditions to prevent further damage to the building,” Zukas said. “It went to a second alarm just to get more manpower there. Every time we strike an alarm, it’s an additional three engines and a ladder, so they had extra crews there to effectively rotate crews to prevent heat exhaustion.”

Zukas said that the Fire Investigation Unit is still investigating the cause of the fire, and that Red Cross officials were at the scene to provide suitable living spaces for those displaced from their home.

Zukas said that the building is “salvageable,” and can be repaired with some construction. The injured person was treated for smoke inhalation, he said.
