NAHANT — Five people were rescued by first responders Sunday night near the East Point Cliffs after their boat crashed into nearby rocks.
According to Police Chief Timothy Furlong and Fire Chief Austin Antrim, police received multiple reports around 7:46 p.m. of a boat that had run into a bed of rocks and began taking on water.
The Harbormaster boat was sent to the scene, with Harbormaster Robert Tibbo, Nahant Fire Lt. Dave Doyle, Nahant Police Sgt. Matthew Morneau, and Firefighter Nick Papagelis all onboard.
Firefighters were able to rescue five individuals from the vessel who were then put onto the Harbormaster boat and sent to the Town Wharf to be evaluated. One person was sent to a hospital in the area, but no other injuries were reported.
As of 4:30 p.m. Monday, the boat was still wedged in between the rocks while the U.S Coast Guard and SeaTow evaluated towing options for the boat.
Furlong commented on the efforts of the first responders involved in the rescue.
“I want to commend everyone for their valiant efforts in this rescue,” he said. “Severe thunderstorms Sunday resulted in slightly choppy water making it difficult to navigate, but thanks to the quick thinking and vigilant efforts of our first responders everyone made it out safely.”
