LYNN — The city is seeking developers for an approximately $10 million accelerated repair project to replace the windows and doors of the Lynn Tech High School building.
Funds from the Massachusetts School Building Authority will be used to pay for 80 percent of the project, while the city will cover the remaining 20 percent, which Chief Inspectional Officer Michael Donovan said will likely total around $2 million.
“It’s about $10 million, and this is part of the accelerated repair project with the MSBA. We apply for roofs, windows, and doors, and the MSBA was very kind on this one. It’s an expensive project, the city will be paying 20 percent of the project, and the MSBA picks up 80 percent,” Donovan said.
Donovan said that the school building, located on Neptune Boulevard, was built in 1971 and its windows and doors are due for renovation.
“The school is a 1971 building. The windows are original, some of the doors have been replaced, but the majority of the doors are original,” Donovan said. “It’s a long time coming for us, because the 1971 windows, they’re old and they’ve taken a beating.”
Due to long lead times on window work, the city will likely select a bidder in September before beginning work on the project in May 2023, Donovan said.
“We’re going out to bid, and it’s expected that we’re awarding sometime in September. Windows are a long lead time nowadays, 16 to 20 weeks. Once the contract gets the job, they’ll have to verify the measurements and get it out to a fabricator to make them,” Donovan said. “Work will start May of 2023, because of the long lead time on the windows. The project will be done in May, June, mostly through the summer, and finishing up in the early fall.”
Donovan said that he is grateful for the MSBA’s continued financial support of the Lynn School District.
“When you look at the city budget, and what the MSBA has given us over the course of years, if you go to the MSBA’s website and saw the amount of accelerated repair projects they’ve done for us, they’ve been very good to the City of Lynn. Lots of windows, doors, roofs, which are very expensive,” he said.
