PEABODY — In the midst of one of New England’s driest summers to date, Peabody has just announced Phase 3 water restrictions, which are mandatory.
The water ban consists of the following rules: no lawn watering until restrictions are lifted, no car washing until restrictions are lifted, and hand watering by pail or water can is not allowed at any time.
Anyone caught violating these terms will be fined no more than $100 per violation.
Essex County has been experiencing a severe drought for the past few months, and is currently in a Level 3-Critical Drought.
In a call sent from City Hall, Mayor Edward A. Bettencourt, Jr. said, “Unfortunately we have had to put in place a mandatory water ban in Peabody. The ongoing drought has dried up significant portions of our reservoirs and left our water storage tanks at extremely low levels.”
