September 2, 2022 by Rachel Barber

Voters will effectively determine the fate of the 8th Essex District state representative race in the Massachusetts primary election next Tuesday, Sept. 6.

The six candidates running to represent the 8th Essex District — Jenny Armini, Diann Slavit Baylis, Tristan Smith, Terri Tauro, Doug Thompson, and Polly Titcomb — are all running as Democrats to represent Marblehead, Swampscott, and Lynn in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Armini of Marblehead is a speechwriter and community activist. Slavit Baylis of Marblehead is a gun violence prevention advocate and attorney. Smith of Swampscott is a recent Suffolk University Law School graduate and community volunteer. Tauro of Marblehead is a Harbormaster department administrator and union leader. Thompson of Swampscott is a former health care executive and advocate. Titcomb of Swampscott is an attorney and former town Select Board chair.

Voters will also effectively determine the result of the Essex County sheriff and district attorney races on Tuesday. The two district attorney candidates are Middleton-based criminal defense attorney James O’Shea and state representative and former Salem police chief Paul Tucker. The two sheriff candidates are longtime Lynn Police Chief Kevin Coppinger and clinical social worker Virginia Leigh. All four candidates are running as Democrats.

Voters are invited to cast their ballots at their precinct’s assigned location from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election day. Election officials advise those unsure of which precinct they belong to, to visit the “Where do I vote” page on Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts William Francis Galvin’s website. All people wishing to cast a ballot must have been registered to vote at least 10 days before election day. Residents can check their voter registration status on the Secretary of State’s website or by contacting their town or city clerk’s office.
