PEABODY — Bishop Fenwick’s field hockey team took down Malden Catholic 7-0 in its first home game of the season.
“We graduated a lot of seniors coming into this year, so today was really just about seeing how we are all going to work together in a real game situation,” said Bishop Fenwick’s coach Marybeth Mahoney. “We have been working on our communication, working together, and trusting each other’s passing. So, that was the hope coming into the game.”
The team struck early thanks to Capt. Rayne Millett scoring the first goal one minute and 44 seconds into the first quarter. Then in the second quarter, Madison Faragi scored the second goal at the six-minute and 44 seconds into the second quarter, followed by Millett again at the five-minute mark, beginning the score to 3-0 for the half.
“Rayne Millett and Zoe Elwell both played in the middle of the field, and they did a good job of controlling the flow of the game. They gave us opportunities on the offensive end and made important stops in the midfield area,” said Mahoney.
Abigaile Bruner scored in the third quarter at the four-minute and 16-second mark, making the score 4-0. Madison Faragi scored another goal at the 10-minute and 40-second mark in the third quarter to bring the score to 5-0. Millett completed a hat trick at the six-minute and 34-second mark in the fourth quarter, making the score 6-0. Elwell then scored the team’s final goal at the 12-minute and 34-second mark, bringing the score to its final standing of 7-0.
“I think that we need to work on our recovery and defense, as well as, making sure we’re strong at our defensive stops. Then our transitions out of our defenses are also something that we need to spend some time on,” said Mahoney. “We have been really working on developing those skills (possession and management). Again we have been working a lot with our ball management and passing, and I think that has helped us with our possession. Being able to see where our next pass option is rather than throwing the ball away causing turnovers.”
This was the first regular-season game for the team, and what a way to start it. “We tell both the JV and varsity teams to just go out there and remember all the things we have been working on for the past couple of weeks. And to do the best they can,” said Mahoney.
