LYNN – St. Mary’s took on Lynn English winning the game 4-0. The teams both played aggressive and physical right out of the starting whistle.
“The boys came ready to play today. They were a little bent from the tie the other night and lost in the shootout. But they came out with their strong mentality today. We were also clicking on offense,” said St. Mary’s coach Shane McCarran. “Our center backs got a goal from the back post on a corner kick, which was great.”
Junior forward Nick Miller scored the first goal of the game for St. Mary’s at the ten minute and twenty-five second mark in the first half. Junior Defensemen Cade Cornell scored the second goal for the Spartans off of the corner kick of senior midfielder Mark Wood at the thirty-two minute and four second mark.
“We have a lot of kids in positions they are not used to playing. So it’s a little frustrating. I think the skill is there for this team but we’re making too many mistakes on the defensive end,” said Lynn English’s coach Kerry King. “That’s what killed us and St. Mary’s came out and beat us to a lot of 50/50 balls today. Which was something that really hurt us.”
English came out strong in the second half by pressing St. Mary’s defense. Sophomore midfielder Anthony Gomez for the Spartans took his shot hitting the crossbar but Miller was there to knock the ball in as it came down. The goal brings the score to 3-0 at the seven minute and one second mark, the goal was also Miller’s second of the game.
“Our defense was amazing today. Jake Guarino, Brody McCarren, Cade Cornell, Eider Solis, and Dylan Maroney who is one of our captains,” said McCarren. “I promise our defense is gonna be one of the strongest in the North Shore.”
Gomez took another shot on goal at the twenty-nine minute and twenty-five second mark to bring the score to 4-0. Midfielder Jose Aleman of Lynn English had an amazing shot on net but was blocked by St. Mary’s Cian LeVasseur. Forward Christian Benitez also had a great game for English by constantly giving the team different opportunities to move the ball.
“It was an unfortunate situation at the goaltending positions. It was just a tough game,” said King. “All around heat and the lack of substitutes, I think played a big role in the game today.”
Defender Eddy Romero came into the goal for the Bulldogs with ten minutes left in the game when Goalie Christopher Zabala left the field due to injury. Romero made a pair of great saves while between the posts.
