Marblehead takes down Winthrop in three-set win

The Magicians girls volleyball team beat Winthrop in straight sets on Thursday, 25-14, 25-23, and 25-16. The winning effort was led by senior Keira Sweetnam who had an impressive 17 kills. Julia Potvin tacked on seven kills of her own to go along with nine assists. Tamya Johnson led in the assists department for her team with 16. Caitlin Parkman had nine digs in a great defensive effort as well. Marblehead improves to 3-1 on the season and will attempt to get their fourth win Friday night when they take on Notre Dame Academy in Hingham.

GIRLS SOCCER

Greater Lawrence 1, Lynn Tech 0

Lynn Tech lost a close one to Greater Lawrence by a score of 1-0. Despite the loss, eighth graders Cindy and Emely DeLeon played well on the pitch for the Tigers. Tech drops to 1-3-1 on the season and will try to right the ship Friday, September 16th when they take on Tech Boston Academy. 

BOYS SOCCER

St. Mary’s 9, Winthrop 0

The Spartans demolished the Vikings of Winthrop Thursday night by a score of 9-0 to boost their record to 5-0-1. Anthony Gomez contributed to five out of the team’s nine goals with a hat trick and two assists in the contest. Nick Miller, Thomas Weber, Mark Wood, Eider Solis, Kaya Jackson, and Derek Garcia all scored for St. Mary’s as well. As for the Spartans defense, it was their fourth shutout of the season and goalkeeper Cian LeVasseur earned his first shutout of the season in net. St. Mary’s will get a five-day break before their next game against Bishop Fenwick next Wednesday. 

Lynnfield 5, Rockport 0

Lynnfield blanked Rockport for their sixth win of the season. Dillon Riley put up three goals for the Pioneers along with Alex Gentile and Brenden Sokup who each scored a goal a piece. Sokup also was outstanding on defense for Lynnfield as he helped his team keep Rockport of the scoreboard as the Pioneers cruised to a victory. 

GOLF

Marblehead 52, Salem 20

The Magicians golf team took down Salem High at Old Salem Golf Course. Marblehead had six players win their match, including Matt Weed, who got medalist honors with 37 points and won his match 7-2. Adrian Baron and Matt Mahan dominated their matches as well, winning 8.5-0.5 and 9-0 respectively. Charlie Grenier won 7.5-1.5 and Jacob Aizanman rounded out Marblehead’s winners by a score of 6-3. The Magicians are now 5-1 and will try to keep the ball rolling when they take on Peabody on Monday.
