Fall Sports Power Rankings (MA)

Joey Barrett

October 4, 2022 by Joey Barrett

October isn’t just the month of Halloween scares and a turn to fall weather – it’s gaining insight on where various fall sports teams rank among the state’s best. Several local programs placed high among their foes, while others look up in the standings (updated Sept. 30 at 4:00 a.m.).

Football

In division I, Springfield Central holds first place, followed by the Tigers of Taunton. An undefeated Andover squad places third, while the Bombardiers of Attleboro and Xaverian Brothers (Westwood) round out the top five.

Among local teams, St. John’s Prep is ranked 8th with wins over Marshfield, Haverhill and, most recently, a 40-6 thrashing of La Salle Academy. Lynn Classical (19) just barely cracked the top 20 – their next matchup being a home tilt against Malden on Friday.

Division II – Peabody Veterans (8)
Division III – Marblehead (9), Lynn English (18)
Division V – Bishop Fenwick (6), Swampscott (20), Saugus (31)
Division VI – St. Mary’s (2), Lynnfield (8)
Division VIII – Lynn Tech (5), KIPP (8)

Boy’s Soccer

Needham, St. John’s, and Ludlow take gold, silver, and bronze in division I boy’s soccer, but the St. John’s Prep Eagles fly behind them in fourth place – the team has played multiple games where they’ve found the back of the net in barrages, including two games where they scored five goals, and another where they netted nine.

Peabody (24) cracked the top 25 with a respectable ranking. Lynn Classical (56) and Lynn English (60) find themselves near the bottom of their respective division I competition. The Bulldogs have yet to win a game this season.

Division II – Marblehead (50)
Division III – Lynnfield (13), St. Mary’s (23), Saugus (31), Swampscott (45), Bishop Fenwick (54)
Division IV – Lynn Tech (15)
Division V – KIPP (26)

Girl’s Soccer

Hingham takes the top spot in division I of girl’s soccer, while the Shamrocks of Bishop Feehan hold the door for them in second place. Newton South, King Philip, and Natick solidify the top five. Peabody (32) just missed the top 30, and Lynn Classical (47) has played well enough to crack the top 50. A struggling Lynn English (57) group finds themselves in last place among division I programs.

Division II – Marblehead (18)
Division III – Lynnfield (15), Saugus (20), Swampscott (23), St. Mary’s (24), Bishop Fenwick (39)
Division IV – Lynn Tech (38)
Division V – KIPP (56)

Field Hockey

Andover stands tall in first place, with the Timberwolves of Walpole coming in second (8-1). Shrewsbury, Franklin, and Chelmsford also hold top-5 spots. Just on the cusp of being .500, Peabody placed 36 in division I.

Division II – Bishop Fenwick (19), Marblehead (40)
Division III – Swampscott (27), Saugus (49)
Division IV – Lynnfield (8), St. Mary’s (12)

Volleyball

Lincoln-Sudbury – having only lost one game this season – looks down upon the rest in division I. Barnstable follows, while Newton North and South land third and fourth consecutively. Acton-Boxborough takes fifth.

Peabody has only lost twice this season – earning them the #20 spot. Lynn Classical placed 44, while a one-win English squad finished the week ranked 52.

Division II – Marblehead (12)
Division III – Swampscott (28), Bishop Fenwick (31), Saugus (40)
Division IV – Lynnfield (7), St. Mary’s (37), Lynn Tech (39)
Division V – KIPP (34)

Rankings will continue to be provided throughout the remainder of the fall sports season.
