LYNN — The Rams of Lynn Classical took both of their matches against Lynn English and Medford High Thursday evening in a tri-match held at Gannon Municipal Golf Course, while the Bulldogs pulled out a victory over Medford.
Classical took care of business against Medford, winning by a landslide, 55-17. More importantly, the Rams got a victory over their Lynn English rivals with a score of 45.5-26.5, to which Classical’s Brady Warren commented on getting an opportunity to face one of the team’s top nemesis.
“English vs. Classical is always big,” said Warren. “We got them last time and we were looking forward to getting them again today.”
Warren was certainly the driving force behind his team’s wins over the Bulldogs and Golden Tornadoes. He finished with a one over par score of 37, winning both of his matches with two bogeys and a birdie on the day. Warren attributes his success on the course to his play off the tee.
“It was pretty solid, didn’t make as many putts as I wanted, but I hit the driver pretty well,” he said. “I have pretty good distance on my driver so it helps if I can keep it in the fairway to give myself some wedges on par fours, make some long holes short, it really helps.”
Also playing well for the Rams were Ryan Dugan, TJ Walsh, and Jake Beyea who all helped their team advance to a record of 8-4 overall and an undefeated record of 7-0 in league play.
On the other side, Alex MacMillan led his team to a huge victory over Medford. Not only was it a huge win in terms of the score, with the team winning 52-20, it was huge in terms of the team staying alive for state qualifying as teams need to have a record of .500 or better to get in. Even with the loss to Classical, the win against the Mustangs of Medford kept the team at a 4-4 record as they teter between contention and elimination.
“This was a very important match for us. We had the big rivalry with Classy, and we also had to beat Medford to stay even on the season,” he said. “That was just our goal today to win one of the matches, come through with a positive and stay even on the season.”
MacMillan noted that his best asset on the course today was his iron game.
“It was mostly my iron shots, I’ve definitely been working on those a lot this summer as well as during the season,” he said. “So it came into play today and helped me win a big match. We played par and bogey golf and got the job done.”
MacMillan dominated his match along with seven other members of his team also winning theirs against Medford, those being John Crowley, Brendan Falasca, Timmy Donahue, Mateo Rodriguez, Jacob Ventura, Kyle Furlong, and Christopher Boyd.
Rodriguez, Furlong, and Boyd all won their matches against Classical as well, despite the loss.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a match with Revere on Tuesday at 4 p.m. as the team battles to stay in contention for a tournament spot and surpass .500.
As for the Rams, the team will battle with a tough Marblehead squad tomorrow at Tedesco Country Club as they try to stay hot going into the playoffs.
