Tanners trample Swampscott in straight sets

It seems like the Peabody girls volleyball team is incapable of losing as of late, with the team earning their eighth victory of the season against Swampscott. The Tanners won in three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-18, and 25-20. Lauryn Mendoca had 14 service points and made things look easy with six aces on the night. The Bettencourt trio of Isabel, Abby, and Lizzy once again dominated on the court for the Tanners. Isabel had six kills and performed remarkably on defense with 17 digs. Abby was an assist machine, totaling 21 on the night and chipping in with six kills. Lizzy rounded out the sisters’ amazing night with seven kills and five aces. Maddie Castro and Gabbie Martinez each added four kills to help in the victory. The Tanners are now 8-2 on the season and have a huge matchup looming on Tuesday against Marblehead at home.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Marblehead 3, Salem 0
The Magicians performed a spell on the Witches Thursday night, sweeping Salem in three sets by scores of 26-16, 25-12, and 25-5. Keira Sweetnam once again led the team with 10 kills. Remington TIlkens played well defensively for Marblehead with five digs as Julia Potvin aced Salem seven times. The Magicians improve to 9-2 this season and have a date with another juggernaut in the Peabody Tanners in Peabody on Tuesday.

GOLF
Bishop Fenwick 189, St. Mary’s 194
The Crusaders just edged out the Spartans on Thursday afternoon in a very competitive bout. Andrew Potter once again had a great match for St. Mary’s, earning his team 30 points. Stephen Nason and Anthony Barror were both one point behind Potter with 29 points each. Shea Newhall continues to play well, adding 27 points on the day with Josh Doney and Alex Chaisson both finishing with solid performances of 24 points apiece. Quinn Sainato and Brendan Zollo rounded out the Spartan’s scorers with 23 and 20 points.

Marblehead 5, Saugus 0
The Sachems of Saugus went into their match against Marblehead short handed on Thursday afternoon and fell to the Magicians, 5-0. Christopher Locke and Charlie Grenier earned medalist honors for Marblehead with 9 hole scores of 35. Marty Ryan shot a 37 with Matt Weed coming in closely behind with a score of 38. Jacob Hershfield won his match for Marblehead along with his other four teammates. Marblehead will duel it out with Lynn Classical Friday at Tedesco.

GIRLS SOCCER
Lynn Classical 3, Revere 0
The Lady Rams shut out Revere on Thursday night, keeping the team’s momentum going. Senior captain Delaney Dana scored and had an assist on the night. Tatiana Lazo scored for the Rams as well, and was assisted by Dulce Juarez. Rounding out the scoring for Classical was Mea Papazoglou. Lauren Wilson got another shutout despite being pelted with shots in net, and went on to save all 15 that came her way.

Marblehead 0, Melrose 0
The two teams failed to come to a decision in Thursday’s game. It was a physical tilt that resulted in both teams having multiple scoring chances, but they could not capitalize. Kate Burns earned her fifth shutout of the year in net for the Magicians with Talia Selby, Grace Mortensen, Sydney Ball and Lilly Gerson all putting in great efforts on the pitch for Marblehead. The team now poses a 4-2-4 record on the season and will take on Danvers at home next Wednesday to try and obtain win number five.

BOYS SOCCER
Lowell Catholic 2, KIPP Academy 1
KIPP lost a tough match to Lowell Catholic by a one score margin on Thursday. The lone goal scored for KIPP was by Jefferson Paz, his 11th of the season. Despite the loss, the team still has an impressive 7-4 overall record and a 7-1 record in league play. KIPP will try to get back into the win column when they travel to Bedford on Tuesday.

FIELD HOCKEY
Beverly 4, Marblehead 0
Marblehead got shutout on their home turf against Beverly on Thursday. James Marcey and Kealy Satterfield had solid performances for the Magicians – even with the loss. Maggie Beauchesne was still able to come up with eight saves in a great defensive effort in net for the Magicians.

CROSS COUNTRY
Marblehead 24, Peabody 31
The Magicians continue their dominance on the trails with a duel meet win over the Tanners. Although his team was defeated, Peabody’s Logan Tracia broke the course record, running a time of 16:45 on his way to a first place finish, just beating out Marblehead’s Harrison Kee by one second. Kee’s time of 16:46 was a new Marblehead record. Will Cerrutti (3rd, 17:04), Isaac Gross (4th, 17:14), and Ryan Thompson (5th, 17:32) all helped to seal the win. Marblehead remains undefeated in duel meet matches, posting a record of 4-0 and looking to go 5-0 next Wednesday against Danvers.
