PEABODY — A mobile home along Route 1 was rendered a total loss after a blaze ripped through it Saturday morning, fire officials said.
Firefighters were called to 176 Newbury St. at 9:13 a.m. Saturday for a report of a possible fire in a trailer, according to Deputy Chief Jay Dowling. Upon arrival, firefighters were met with heavy fire showing from the front of the trailer.
The trailer was “fully involved” with fire, Dowling said, making it impossible for firefighters to gain entry into the building. He praised the work of responding crews Saturday morning for preventing the blaze from spreading to two neighboring mobile homes.
Two women had self-evacuated from the trailer by the time firefighters arrived and were receiving assistance from the Red Cross, Dowling said.
The trailer was a total loss by the time firefighters arrived, he said. The Lynn and Salem fire departments helped cover Peabody’s fire station while crews battled the blaze, Dowling said.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by investigators with the Peabody Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office, according to Dowling.
At the scene Sunday, the charred husk of the trailer was blocked off with caution tape, and the smell of smoke still emanated from the structure. Nearly all of the red and white painted exterior of the trailer had been burned away, leaving its scorched insides completely exposed.
