Classical hands Medford first conference loss, qualifies for tournament

The Lynn Classical girls soccer team (9-2-1) defeated Medford, 2-0, on Tuesday evening to advance to the state tournament. Sophomore Tatiana Lazo scored off a rebound – assisted by senior captain Ava Thurman. Their second tally came courtesy of senior captain Delaney Dana off a cross from Thurman. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Wilson also tallied 16 saves.

Saugus 5, Gloucester 0
Shawn Sewell got things started for the Sachems, weaving her way through the defense for her seventh goal, and the team never looked back. Madison Botta, Madi Femino, and Allie Justice all collected tallies. The defense shut down Gloucester’s forwards in front of goalkeeper Tori Carter, and the team picked up their fifth shutout of 2022. Saugus moves to 8-2-1 on the season.

BOYS SOCCER
St. Mary’s 0, Essex Tech 1
The Spartans (7-2-1) played solid on the road Tuesday evening, but were shut out by the Hawks. Jake Guarino had a strong performance in net with nine saves to provide his team with a spark – Hakeem Akande also played well in the loss. St. Mary’s plays again this Friday against Arlington Catholic as they aim to match their win total from last season.

GOLF
St. Mary’s 184, Arlington Catholic 156
St Mary’s (11-5) won their final regular season match of the season against Arlington Catholic at Gannon, 184-156. The Spartans’ points leaders were Shea Newhall (30), Kyle Rush (28), Eric Bridges (27), Stephen Nason (26), Alex Chaisson (25), Andrew Potter (24), and Josh Doney (24). Potter, Newhall, Bridges, Rush, Nason, and Anthony Barror will represent St. Mary’s in the upcoming Division II North Sectional state tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Beverly 50, Swampscott 22
The Swampscott golf team lost to the Panthers of Beverly, 50-22. Nate Maercklein of the Big Blue won his match, shooting a 39. Jason Bouffard shot a 36, and Ben O’Brien submitted a 38. Next on the schedule for Swampscott is Masco on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 4:00 p.m. at Tedesco Country Club.

Classical 54.5, Medford 17.5
Lynn Classical improved to 9-5 this season and 8-0 in conference. Brady Warren paced the team with a 2 under par 33. Ryan Dugan, TJ Walsh, Ethan Chavalier, Christian Spates, Jake Beyea and Kevin Whalen all won their matches, respectively.

VOLLEYBALL
Peabody 2, Marblehead 3
The Tanners (8-3) came up short against Marblehead on Tuesday evening. Abby Bettencourt collected 30 assists and 13 kills, Maddie Castro added five kills, Isabel Bettencourt tacked on 14 kills and five aces, and Lizzy Bettencourt contributed 13 kills. Michaela Alperen and Allie Flewelling combined for 38 digs, also. The team faces Masco this Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Peabody High.

KIPP 0, St. Mary’s 3
St. Mary’s swept KIPP (25/22, 25/17, 25/20) on Tuesday largely due to the performances of juniors Loryness Suriel and Nadia Delsonno, and freshman Sky Watson. Suriel had nine kills, five service aces, five block touches, three solo blocks, and 10 digs. Watson collected eight kills, seven digs, and four service aces – as well as assisting on nearly every kill. Delsonno recorded six kills to go along with nine digs.

Lynn Tech 0, Whittier 3
In set scores of 11-25, 16-25, and 20-25, Whitter swept the Tigers. Maria Groscos had four digs, three kills, one block, and an ace. Ava Bishop also added seven digs as the team fell to 6-9 on the season.
