SWAMPSCOTT— At the start of the Swampscott school committee meeting on Thursday, Susan Comparato was awarded the Educator of the Year 22-23SY.
Comparato was hired as a business teacher and instructional technologist for Swampscott In August 1996. Over the past 27 years she has offered many courses: web design, multimedia, word processing, computer applications, computer repair, business math, accounting, business law, social media marketing and her true passion, financial literacy.
Over 400 Swampscott students learned how to manage their money for a better financial future thanks to Comparato since the district made the Financial Literacy class a graduation requirement. She obtained 13 (now in the process of getting her 14th) certifications in various areas.
“No one is more deserving than Sue Comparato for the Educator of the Year 22-23 SY, Congratulations, Sue!” Pamela R.H. Angelakis, Superintendent of Swampscott Public Schools, said.
Comparato also served as the advisor to the National Honor Society for 13 years and the advisor to the yearbook for 24 years and is currently serving as co advisor to the newly formed National Business Honor Society.
“I’m very proud of a lot of the things that I’ve accomplished, but I’m most proud of the relationships that I’ve formed,” said Comparato. “I love when my students come back and tell me what they’re doing.”
Angelakis then recognized five educators who achieved professional status within the district, including Emily Cilley, school nurse in middle school; Alexandra Kelly, teacher-grade three in Stanley/Blaney school; Kaelyn Leonard, P.E. teacher in middle school; Erik Mackat, science teacher in high school; and Leigh Anne Postizzi, speech teacher in Preschool. The requirement for professional status achievement is three years of teaching in the district.
This is Emily Cilley’s 11th year in Swampscott Public Schools. Three of her daughters graduated from Swampscott Public Schools, the fourth will graduate in the class of 2027.
Erik Mackay came to Swampscott High School with five years of experience. He has been promoting and developing the new astronomy and space course at the high school. Mackay also serves as a resident meteorologist offering predictions and forecasts for winter weather.
