Tanya Manning, mother of St. John’s Prep co-captain Terry Manning, was diagnosed with cancer less than a year ago – unfortunately, like many women around the world. This past Thursday at Kernwood Country Club, the St. John’s Prep and St. John’s Shrewsbury varsity golf teams played for something far more important than a win.
In an effort stemming from St. John’s Prep senior Ian Rourke, both teams played in pink polo shirts and pink ribbons. Depending on match performances, each player’s scoring correlated to how much each individual would contribute.
St. John’s Shrewsbury agreed. Head Coach Sean Noonan chose to match his team’s contributions – along with some parents.
St. John’s Prep chose Tough Warrior Princesses in Amesbury, Mass. as the donor recipient. Its mission is to provide support, comfort, love, and resources to women affected by cancer.
Through the organization, Tanya Manning was given resources and courage to cope with her disease throughout the past year.
The total earnings aren’t definitive, but St. John’s Prep Head Coach Brian Jasiak thinks the effort may reach close to $5,000.
Rourke took things further than the match – going door-to-door last Wednesday to raise another additional $300.
Despite the Eagles falling in their season finale, Rourke led the team with a 35. Jack Carew submitted a 38, and Tripp Hollister and Brian Loughlin contributed with 39s.
With victories against Gloucester, Malden Catholic, Winchester, Catholic Memorial, Boston College High, and Danvers, St. John’s Prep ended the 2022 regular season with an 8-4 record.
The Eagles have reached out to various clubs, family, and friends to raise additional money to help the cause. The team aims to raise awareness for cancers hurting women around the world.
