KIPP qualifies for state tournament, wins 3-0

KIPP’s boys soccer team (9-5) defeated Innovation Academy on Wednesday, 3-0, to qualify for the state tournament for the second year in a row. KIPP also solidified its second CAC small conference championship in the victory. Goals were scored by senior captain Kenny DeLeon, senior Jefferson Paz, and sophomore Jelder De Leon – whose tally was a beautifully-placed ball in the top corner off a Buike Iloba assist. Angel Lopez recorded yet another shutout this season, and KIPP travels to Whittier Tech on Thursday, Oct. 20 to complete conference play.

BOYS SOCCER

St. Mary’s 4, Cardinal Spellman 0
The Spartans boys soccer team defeated Cardinal Spellman on the road Wednesday, 4-0. Eider Solis scored twice; Kaya Jackson and Anthony Gomez each contributed with one goal apiece. Jacob Guarino earned the clean sheet with a penalty kick save late in the second half to snag his seventh shutout on the season. St. Mary’s moves to 11-2-1 on the season and goes up against Watertown at 12 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 22 at Manning Field.

GIRLS SOCCER

St. Mary’s 3, Cardinal Spellman 0
A pair of underclassmen led the St. Mary’s girls soccer team to victory over Cardinal Spellman on Wednesday, 3-0. Freshman Sophie Skabeikis scored twice while Sophomore Brooke Moloney tacked on another. On the defensive end, Bre Moloney, Captains Allie Fritz and Olivia Egan, and Riley Maguire played well in the win. In goalkeeper Kylie Kennison’s seventh shutout of the season, she stopped seven Spellman shots. St. Mary’s moves to 10-4-2 on the season.

CROSS COUNTRY

Both Lynnfield cross country teams got big wins at Ipswich on Wednesday. The boys (1-4) won 21-34, led by Angelo DeLuca who ran a time of 19:04 (first overall) and John McKrell (19:20 – second overall). The girls won, 15-48, and took nine of the first 10 spots. Maddie Daigle led the way with a time of 21:49 (first overall). Both teams compete at the Cape Ann League conference meet in Wrentham on Saturday, Oct. 29

VOLLEYBALL

Peabody 3, Danvers 0
Marblehead volleyball continued its dominance on Wednesday, defeating Danvers in straight sets of 25-19, 26-24, and 25-22. Abby Bettencourt had 10 assists and four aces, Lauryn Mendoca had 12 service points and three aces, and Isabel Bettencourt racked up 11 kills. Lizzy Bettencourt also tacked on 16 service points and four aces. Peabody moves to 13-3 and hosts Beverly on Thursday, Oct. 20.

Masco 3, Marblehead 0
The Magicians were defeated by Masco on Wednesday, 3-0, in sets of 19-25, 18-25, and 9-25. Despite the loss, Keira Sweetnam had eight kills and Tamya Johnson dished out 11 assists. Marblehead moves to 11-3 on the season.

Innovation 3, Tech 0
In set scores of 25-15, 25-16, and 25-15, Innovation Academy downed the Lynn Tech volleyball team on the hardwood. Maria Groscos had eight digs while Lia Morales collected six digs and two aces. Tech’s record moves to 7-12 on the season.

GOLF

Marblehead 45, Masco 27
The Marblehead golf team (12-3) ended its season on a high note, defeating Masco at Ferncroft Country Club, 45-27. Matt Weed, Jacob Hershfield, Charlie Grenier, Jacob Aizanman, Matt Mahan, and Adrian Baron all won their matches. Weed was also the medalist, shooting a 36. Charlie Grenier and Christopher Locke each shot a 38, while Matt Mahan shot a 39.
