The Magicians’ senior captain Carlin McGowan scored early in the second half off a corner kick, assisted by Sadie Halpern, to give the Marblehead girls soccer team a 1-0 win over Peabody. Junior Kate Burns not only returned to action, but collected her sixth shutout of the season. Sydney Ball, Cait Mullins, Samantha Dormer, and Leah Schauer all played well in the midfield. Marblehead moves to 7-3-5 on the season and officially clinches a playoff spot.
BOYS SOCCER
KIPP 6, Whittier Tech 3
The Panthers (10-5) boys soccer team extended their winning streak to three games on Thursday, defeating Whittier Tech, 6-3. Senior captain Kenny DeLeon earned the hat-trick, Jelder DeLeon added two more, and Gabriel Barrios scored as well. Jefferson Paz dished out three assists while sophomore defender Josue DeLeon registered a solid game on the defensive end. KIPP travels to Stoneham on Friday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m. for its third game in as many days.
Swampscott 1, Salem 1
The Big Blue and Witches tied on Thursday, with Szymon Wabno scoring Swampscott’s tally coming from Szymon Wabno off a Costa Shub assist. The Big Blue travel to Saugus on Monday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m.
Peabody 4, Marblehead 2
John Arruda continued his hot streak on Thursday, scoring another two goals in Peabody’s 4-2 victory over Marblehead. Nathan Braz and Bruno Correia were the other goal-scorers while Michael Sablone and Hugo Countinho racked up an assist each in the win. Peabody moves to 12-2-2 on the season and hosts Beverly on Monday.
FIELD HOCKEY
St. Mary’s 1, Georgetown 0
Gabbi Oakes tallied the lone goal for the Spartans’ field hockey team in their 1-0 victory over Georgetown on Thursday. Adri Bowker recorded yet another shutout, and the St. Mary’s defense played well from the first whistle to the last. The road victory puts St. Mary’s at 11-4-1 on the season.
VOLLEYBALL
Peabody 3, Beverly 0
In set scores of 25-21, 25-14, and 25-18, the Tanners continued what’s been a stellar week for them on the hardwood. Isabel Bettencourt collected her 500th career kill and tallied 13 in the game. Abby Bettencourt dished out 24 assists to go along with five aces, while Kaya Grabowski and Michaela Alperen contributed with two aces apiece. Lauryn Mendoca had another great night at the service line on top of three kills. Peabody moves to 14-3 on the season and hosts Swampscott on Monday, Oct. 24.
