Voters will determine few local races during the midterm elections next Tuesday, Nov. 8, with several contests having been decided during the primary elections in September.
However, Massachusetts voters will choose their next governor Tuesday. The candidates for governor are state Attorney General Maura Healey and former State Rep. Geoff Diehl. Lieutenant governor candidates are Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll and former State Rep. Leah Cole Allen. Healey and Driscoll make up the Democratic ticket, while Diehl and Allen comprise the Republican ticket.
Nationally, every U.S. House of Representatives seat will be up for grabs on Tuesday. Voters will also determine the fate of 35 U.S. Senate seats and 36 governorships.
Massachusetts voters will also choose between former Boston City Councilor Andrea Campbell, who is running as a Democrat, and Republican attorney Jay McMahon for state Attorney General. Swampscott Republican Anthony Amore will square off against state Sen. Diana DiZoglio from Methuen in the state auditor’s race.
Locally, voters will determine the result of the Massachusetts Sixth Congressional District race between incumbent Democrat Seth Moulton, Peabody Republican Bob May, and Georgetown Libertarian Mark Tashjian.
Incumbent Democrat Joan Lovely also faces competition over the Second Essex District seat in the state senate. On Tuesday, she will square off against Peabody Republican Damian Anketell.
Next week’s election will also solidify State Rep.-elect Jenny Armini’s victory in the Eighth Essex District, as she faces no Republican challenger Tuesday.
Also on the ballot are Questions 1, 2, 3, and 4. If passed, Question 1 would raise taxes on income over $1 million and Question 2 would require dental insurers to spend more on patient care. Question 3 seeks to increase the statewide limit on the number of retail alcohol licenses an establishment can hold and Question 4, if passed, would allow undocumented immigrants to receive driver’s licenses.
Lynn City Clerk and Election Chief Janet Rowe said early voting and voting by mail have been “very taxing” on her staff. She said they have worked the last 19 days without time off to prepare for the election.
“They have done an outstanding job keeping up with the vote by mail and early voter visitors, but it feels like running two elections at the same time,” Rowe said in an email. “Many Clerks throughout the Commonwealth feel the same way expressing ‘sheer exhaustion.’ We all cannot wait for Nov. 9.”
