SWAMPSCOTT —  A car crashed into the Stop & Shop at 450 Paradise Road Monday evening, leaving a gaping hole in the storefront.

Swampscott police and fire crews responded to the incident. As of press time, a row of grocery carts and yellow tape block off the area around the hole in the building. Despite obvious damage to the building, several parked cars outside the store were unscathed during the incident. A tow truck also responded to the scene.

“Stop & Shop is aware of this unfortunate accident which took place at our Swampscott store,” Stop & Shop Director of Community Relations Jennifer Brogan said in a statement. “We are cooperating with local law enforcement. We can confirm that no associates or customers were injured.”

As of press time, Swampscott’s police and fire departments were not available to provide additional details.

Sylvia Chen of the Item staff contributed to this report.
